Come out to Chrome Lounge on Thursday, April 22nd at 8pm for the "Jammin' for Kids' Sake" fundraiser!
The cover charge is $3, and all proceeds will help benefit the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Midlands. Chrome will also have some drink specials including $2 pints!
There will be complimentary food available between 8pm and 10pm. No minors will be allowed to remain at the lounge past 10pm.
Several local bands have volunteered their time to come and perform for "Jammin' for Kids' Sake" including Drunken Intentions, Artillery Funk, Monkey Puzzle, Imperium, Broken Crown, and Miss Misery. This is also an OPEN jam, and all musicians are welcome to come and sit in on the show.
There will also be a raffle with prizes such as a $500 Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker, a one hour massage and bath basket donated by Tiffany Shreck LMT, a steak and burger combo from Omaha Steaks, Fun Plex passes, various certificates and gifts from No Frills, Lo Sol Amio, Sgt. Peffer's Pizza, Petrow's, Brass Monkey, Chrome Lounge, and more! Raffle tickets cost $1 each or 7 for $5. You do not need to be present to win.
I recently got the opportunity to interview the woman behind this benefit, Melanie Dickinson. Melanie was initially inspired to create this event thanks to the "Bowling for Kids' Sake" benefit that Omaha Steaks, her place of work, among many other local groups and businesses participate in.
Each year, she says, they divide up into teams with the goal of raising the most money for the "Bowling for Kids' Sake" benefit. Usually the teams will go around to their friends and family and collect what donations they can.
But Melanie wanted to go above and beyond just collecting donations from a few people. So she created the "Jammin' for Kids' Sake" concert benefit last year. As a member of the local band Drunken Intentions, Melanie thought she'd ask for help from Omaha's numerous bands. It hasn't really been hard to organize, she said. The other local musicians are great; "people are willing to give, you only gotta ask."
I also asked Melanie why she decided to hold the benefit at Chrome Lounge. She replied that Chrome has the biggest and best stage in Omaha, and the layout is perfect for this sort of thing. Plus the people at Chrome are always willing to donate their time and money for a good cause.
When asked why she chose Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Midlands as her charity, she said that it just happened to be where Omaha Steaks' fundraiser was donating to. Plus, she said, I love kids, and kids today need something in their life, what with the current divorce rate and number of single parents out there. Melanie said that when it's for a good cause, she can get into anything.
